I was doing everything wrong.

I handed influencers massive packets of information down to the specific time they should go live, the exact filter thinking it would help them understand my brand. I scripted their posts to use, the precise aesthetic I wanted. I thought control was the path to successful partnerships. I thought structure meant success.

It didn't.

The engagement was lower. The content felt forced. And honestly, the influencers weren't even excited about what they were creating. I was so focused on executing my vision that I completely missed the point of working with creators in the first place.

She wasn't following my script. She was telling her own story, and it resonated infinitely more than anything I could have written for her.

When I was controlling every detail, I was actually preventing them from being their authentic selves. And that's exactly why those partnerships weren't as powerful. The forced feeling, the lower engagement, the lack of excitement—it all stemmed from the same problem: I wasn't letting creators be creators.
